Johannesburg – The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) will hold a press briefing today at 11:00 am at the Luthuli House Media Centre, where its President, Collen Malatji, is set to address a range of pressing issues impacting South African communities.

This presser will provide a platform for the ANCYL to outline its stance on crucial socio-economic topics and offer insights into the league’s policy positions on several matters affecting youth and broader society.

According to the ANCYL’s National Spokesperson, the topics to be addressed span critical areas of national interest, including education reform, coalition governance challenges, consumer protection, empowerment of local businesses, and initiatives supporting inclusivity and safety. The briefing will offer the media an opportunity to engage with ANCYL on its perspective and actions regarding these pivotal issues.

Key Topics on the Agenda

The briefing will focus on six major issues that the ANCYL believes are central to the development and well-being of South African youth and communities:
1. The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act
The ANCYL will discuss the implications of the BELA Act, which is intended to bring much-needed reforms to the country’s education system. The act has sparked conversations around its potential impact on youth development and the pressing need for its implementation. The ANCYL has long been vocal about the importance of educational reform as a means of empowering young South Africans. President Malatji is expected to elaborate on the league’s view of the BELA Act, its potential benefits for learners, and the urgency of addressing gaps in the current education framework.
2. Challenges in the Government of National Unity (GNU) with DA Ministers
Recent challenges within the Government of National Unity (GNU) have surfaced, particularly concerning the DA ministers’ reluctance to support key government programmes. The ANCYL intends to outline the issues this creates for coalition unity and government effectiveness. President Malatji will provide insights into the league’s stance on the political tension in the GNU and how this impacts the broader socio-economic objectives of the ruling government.
3. Consumer Safety Concerns Following the Deaths of Children
The ANCYL has expressed deep concern over the recent tragic incidents where children reportedly died after consuming poisoned snacks from shops owned by undocumented foreign nationals. These events have highlighted the urgent need for stricter regulations and consumer protection measures. The ANCYL will call for stronger oversight and compliance within the informal retail sector to prevent future tragedies. President Malatji is expected to discuss the measures needed to protect vulnerable communities from unsafe products and address public fears around unregulated food products.
4. Regulation of Spaza Shops and Economic Support for Local Entrepreneurs
Spaza shops play a vital role in the South African economy, particularly in townships and rural areas. However, concerns over health and safety compliance have necessitated a call for more regulation. The ANCYL will explore how these regulations, alongside economic support, can empower local entrepreneurs and support the informal economy. President Malatji is likely to discuss proposed measures to formalise spaza shop operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide resources to local business owners.
5. Promoting Disability Awareness and Inclusion
As South Africa observes National Disability Awareness Month, the ANCYL will highlight its initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. The league plans to underscore the importance of policies that support accessibility and integration for individuals with disabilities. President Malatji is expected to outline ANCYL’s approach to addressing social and economic barriers faced by disabled individuals and ensuring their equal participation in society.
6. Advocacy Against Gender-Based Violence During 16 Days of Activism
The ANCYL will also focus on its commitment to combating gender-based violence (GBV) through its participation in the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. With GBV being a persistent challenge in South Africa, the ANCYL is determined to strengthen efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable communities and raising awareness around this critical issue. President Malatji will likely share insights on the league’s initiatives, partnerships, and strategies for addressing GBV and supporting survivors.

Addressing Pressing Concerns

The press briefing is not only a platform for ANCYL to articulate its policy positions but also an opportunity for the youth league to directly address the public and reassure communities that these issues are receiving attention at the highest levels.

Importance of the BELA Act and Education Reform

Education remains a cornerstone of development in South Africa, and the ANCYL believes that reforming the current system is essential for addressing the needs of the youth. The BELA Act, which aims to bring substantial changes to the educational landscape, is viewed as a critical tool for modernising and improving learning conditions. ANCYL’s stance on education reform underscores its commitment to creating an inclusive and effective educational environment that can uplift young South Africans and equip them with the skills needed for the future.

Coalition Dynamics in the GNU

The ANCYL has voiced concerns regarding the challenges within the Government of National Unity, specifically pointing to the DA ministers’ refusal to align with government programmes. This tension within the coalition raises questions about the GNU’s stability and ability to function effectively. The ANCYL sees these issues as impediments to unified governance and believes that the actions of coalition members should align with the country’s broader goals.

Enhancing Consumer Protection and Food Safety

The recent fatalities linked to poisoned snacks have brought food safety to the forefront of public concern. In response, the ANCYL is advocating for stricter consumer protection laws and improved regulation of food products sold in local shops. This call to action highlights the league’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations, especially children, from unsafe products.

Empowering Local Businesses Through Regulation and Support

By supporting spaza shop regulation, the ANCYL is advocating for a structured approach to informal retail that both protects consumers and empowers local entrepreneurs. These proposed measures aim to uplift township economies by providing spaza shop owners with the resources and guidance needed to operate safely and sustainably.

Advocating for Disability Rights

Through its initiatives promoting disability awareness, the ANCYL seeks to build an inclusive society that recognises the rights and needs of people with disabilities. As part of National Disability Awareness Month, the league aims to amplify the conversation on inclusivity and push for policies that support access to services, employment, and social participation for disabled individuals.

Strengthening the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

The ANCYL’s participation in the 16 Days of Activism underscores its dedication to combating gender-based violence. Through partnerships, awareness campaigns, and community engagement, the league is working to create safer environments for women and children across South Africa.

Media Engagement and Public Dialogue

The press briefing will provide journalists and members of the media with an opportunity to engage directly with the ANCYL, allowing for in-depth discussions and clarifications on the league’s policies and initiatives. This dialogue is expected to foster a better understanding of the ANCYL’s approach to addressing these pressing social and economic issues.
