By Thys Khiba – The ANC Youth League in the Ngaka Modiri Molema region has called for the removal of local and district mayors who are not delivering services to the residents of Ward 16 and 20 in Mahikeng Local Municipality.
The ANCYL said they were concerned about sewage spills in the affected wards.
“The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has learned with a great concern about the non-attendance of a continuous sewerage spillage in Ward 16 and 20 (MahikengMunicipality).
“On the 16th August 2023, the REC deliberated on service delivery challenges particularly in our district and local municipalities,” said ANCYL spokesperson Itumeleng Mokoena.
Mokoena has linked the pills to poorly maintained technical infrastructure.
“The poorly maintained technical infrastructure in our wards is very disturbing, particularly as we approach 2024 General Elections that will be highly contested,” said Mokoena.
The ANCYL said service delivery promises made by the district executive mayor Khumalo Molefe are still not implemented.
Pupils of Molema Primary School, Podile Primary School, Tselabotlhe Creche and community members in Mahikeng said they continue to struggle to access basic service delivery. This is also affecting the health of local patients.
For more than three months government has been failing to resolve the issue.
The league has questioned the manner in which the district and local mayors are prioritising services.
Earlier this month, Molefe [district] and Mahikeng Local Municipality executive mayor introduced he service provider who is responsible for the removal and disposal of the dead fish Tontonyane Dam.
“It can never be correct that a service provider is appointed to clean Tontonyane Setumo dam that continues to be contaminated by the very same spillages.
“The spillages must be attended first before cleaning of Tontonyane Dam, it does not need one to have a PhD to understand that simple logic,” said the ANCYL in a statement.
The league has promised to join and assist the affected community members on any proposed and organised service delivery protest.
Speaking to Central News, Mokoena indicated that they will be meeting with Molefe on Wednesday, 23 August to find practical service delivery solutions.
