The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Ngaka Modiri Molema regional secretary Puseletso Mosadi, including other two community members Othusitse Motsamai and Seako Masibi have been shot with rubber bullets allegedly by SAPS officers during a service delivery protest near Seweding carwash in Mahikeng on Wednesday, 23 August.
Mosadi was immediately taken to the nearest medical doctor to receive medical examination.
The regional spokesperson Itumeleng Mokoena indicated that the other two victims were taken to the local clinic for assistance.
“This unfortunate event happened after the ANCYL was in support of Ward 16 and 20 communities on their peaceful demonstration against poor service delivery in their respective wards.
“The community of Seweding and Ramosadi have been living with water spillages for more than three months. The entire Seweding village is stinking due to these spillages, and pupils of two primary schools (Molema Primary School and PodilePrimary School) are extremely affected by these stinking sewerage spillages,” said Mokoena.
This comes after the ANCYL in the region called for theremoval of local and district mayors who are not delivering services to the residents of Ward 16 and 20 in Mahikeng Local Municipality.
The ANCYL said they were concerned about sewage spills in the affected wards.
“The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has learned with a great concern about the non-attendance of a continuous sewerage spillage in Ward 16 and 20 (MahikengMunicipality).
“On the 16th August 2023, the REC deliberated on service delivery challenges particularly in our district and local municipalities,” said ANCYL spokesperson ItumelengMokoena.
Mokoena has linked the spills to poorly maintained technical infrastructure.
“The poorly maintained technical infrastructure in our wards is very disturbing, particularly as we approach 2024 General Elections that will be highly contested,” said Mokoena.
The ANCYL said service delivery promises made by the district executive mayor Khumalo Molefe are still not implemented.
Pupils of Molema Primary School, Podile Primary School, Tselabotlhe Creche and community members in Mahikeng said they continue to struggle to access basic service delivery. This is also affecting the health of local patients.
For more than three months government has been failing to resolve the issue.
The league has questioned the manner in which the district and local mayors are prioritising services.
Earlier this month, Molefe [district] and Mahikeng Local Municipality executive mayor introduced he service provider who is responsible for the removal and disposal of the dead fish Tontonyane Dam.
“It can never be correct that a service provider is appointed to clean Tontonyane Setumo dam that continues to be contaminated by the very same spillages.
“The spillages must be attended first before cleaning of Tontonyane Dam, it does not need one to have a PhD to understand that simple logic,” said the ANCYL in a statement.
The league has promised to join and assist the affected community members on any proposed and organised service delivery protest.
On Wednesday, 23 August, the league indicated that they have lost confidence in Molefe as the district mayor.
“We are aware that the mayor Khumalo Molefe has this tendency of issuing restraining orders and instructing police to intimidate dissatisfied communities.
“The Executive Mayor has instructed the police too shoot and threated the communities that were merely seeking for decisive intervention in their challenges,” Mokoena said.
An asthmatic patient and elderly man, Kepadisa alleges that the troubled mayor has not delivered his promises of supplying him with the relevant protective clothing.
“The ANCYL has visited Mr. Kepadisa who is an asthmatic patient, the old man was crying out loud, and shared the painful story with the ANCYL as to how these stinking sewerage spillages exacerbate his illness.”
