The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has once again raised its voice against the ongoing unemployment crisis in South Africa. Today, 9 September 2024, hundreds of young people, led by ANCYL President Collen Malatji, are marching in eThekwini, demanding urgent government intervention to tackle youth unemployment. This protest follows a series of calls by the ANCYL for decisive action on what they have termed a “national disaster” of joblessness among the youth.
Malatji has been vocal about the issue in several public addresses, stating that if the government does not address the crisis, the next march will be to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The ANCYL’s demands include the creation of millions of job opportunities through government programmes and policies that favour youth employment, including a call for an unemployment grant to help young people navigate the job market.
Unemployment, especially among the youth, remains a significant issue in South Africa. Current estimates suggest that over 45% of young people are jobless, a figure that has seen little improvement despite government interventions. The ANCYL has accused the government of being slow to implement effective policies that would resolve this crisis.
The ANCYL has previously urged the government to create at least 2.5 million jobs through the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme. However, today’s protest highlights the growing dissatisfaction with the slow pace of job creation and the lack of support for young people in navigating the job market. The league has been clear: if their demands are not met, they will take their protest to Pretoria, escalating the pressure on the national government.
