South Africa's ANC party led by President Cyril Ramaphosa says it is seeking a government of national unity

ANC NWC

The African National Congress (ANC)’s National Working Committee (NWC) is convening with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in Boksburg, eastern Johannesburg, to address significant electoral setbacks and internal challenges. This meeting follows the ANC’s substantial decline in support during the May 29 general elections, where the party’s share in KwaZulu-Natal plummeted from 54.22% in 2019 to approximately 17% in 2024.

Electoral Decline and Internal Dynamics

The ANC’s diminished performance in KwaZulu-Natal has been attributed to various factors, including the emergence of the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, led by former President Jacob Zuma. The MK party secured a plurality in the province, obtaining 37 out of 80 seats in the provincial legislature, thereby displacing the ANC from its longstanding majority position.

In response to these developments, some senior ANC members have advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of the provincial leadership to counter the growing influence of the MK party and to revitalise the ANC’s presence in the region. The NWC’s engagement with the KwaZulu-Natal PEC is seen as a critical step in addressing these concerns and formulating a strategic response.

Leadership Accountability and Strategic Discussions

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has underscored the importance of this meeting, describing it as “compulsory” for all PEC members. The agenda includes a thorough examination of the factors contributing to the electoral losses and the development of strategies to rebuild support in the province.

Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo has expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation, acknowledging the need for introspection and corrective measures. He emphasised that the national leadership must also assume responsibility for the party’s overall performance, stating, “The National Executive Committee led by President [Cyril] Ramaphosa and [Secretary-General Fikile] Mbalula lost the country by 40%. They must take that responsibility; we are taking ours.”

Implications for Provincial Leadership

The NWC is expected to propose leadership changes within the KwaZulu-Natal PEC, with recommendations to be presented to the National Executive Committee (NEC) during its mid-December meeting. These potential changes aim to strengthen the party’s organisational capacity and electoral appeal in the province.

The outcome of this meeting holds significant implications for the ANC’s future trajectory in KwaZulu-Natal. The party’s ability to effectively address internal challenges and external competition will be crucial in restoring its political dominance and public confidence in the region.

As the ANC navigates this critical juncture, the decisions made in these deliberations will play a pivotal role in shaping the party’s strategies and prospects in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
