Eskom’s Stage 6 Loadshedding Sparks Claims of Sabotage by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula
Johannesburg – South Africa is facing a worsening power crisis as Eskom, the national electricity utility, has announced that Stage 6 load shedding will continue until further notice.
This drastic measure has sparked concern across the nation and condemnation from political figures, with ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula taking to social media platform X to voice his frustration, labelling the action as sabotage.
Eskom’s sudden announcement came at 00:29 am this Saturday, shocking many with the severity of the loadshedding. The implementation of Stage 6 – a level that indicates a severely constrained power grid – means that South Africans will experience extended periods without electricity, disrupting daily life and commerce.
“Since last Thursday, Eskom has faced setbacks due to multiple generating units being taken out of service. Ten generating units in total, with five due to boiler tube leaks, severely affecting our generation capacity,” Eskom detailed in a statement. The concurrent delay in returning three units from planned maintenance added further strain on the already overextended power supply, forcing reliance on dwindling emergency reserves.
Eskom has been transparent about the dire condition of the energy grid: “Unplanned outages are currently at 17,798 MW of generating capacity, while planned maintenance accounts for another 6,653 MW out of service.”
In efforts to mitigate the situation, Eskom’s Power Station General Managers and their teams have reinstated three generating units and are working tirelessly to restore an additional 2,400 MW of generating capacity by Monday morning. The power utility has also appealed to the public to use electricity sparingly.
Stage 6 loadshedding will persist until further notice as Eskom struggles to bring its generating units back online, with an update on the power system’s status promised for Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa in his recent State of the Nation Address, remained optimistic on the energy issue. Delivering his speech at the Cape Town City Hall, he emphasized the government’s “single-minded focus” on implementing the Energy Action Plan, and signalling the end of load shedding “finally within reach.”
“We have delivered on our commitments to bring substantial new power through private investment onto the grid, which is already helping to reduce load shedding,” President Ramaphosa said. The government’s efforts have resulted in more than 2,500 MW of solar and wind power connected to the grid, with triple this amount currently being procured or constructed.
