ANC Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, seemed to have let slip that the country would see its next general elections taking place on May 24, a date that has yet to be confirmed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Deputy President’s comments have rapidly spread across social media platforms following a moment during his address to ANC faithful at a stakeholder engagement event.

“We must go out there, united with one common purpose, to ensure that come the 24 of May, when we go to the elections…” Mashatile was recorded saying during an assembly at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall in the Moses Mabhida Region on Saturday. The engagement was part of a series of build-up activities ahead of the ANC’s much-awaited #ANCManifestoLaunch that is scheduled to take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

While the Deputy President’s statement has enthused ANC members to commence groundwork for canvassing, it has drawn criticism from opposition parties.

Mkhuleko Hlengwa, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) MP and national spokesperson, expressed his party’s disagreement with the proposed election date. “We do not support the idea of having the elections on May 24, 2024. It seems like a deliberate ploy to decrease voter turnout as it would result in a long weekend,” Hlengwa articulated at an IFP event in Durban ahead of their own manifesto launch at the Moses Mabhida stadium next month.

The South African Constitution stipulates that the President of the Republic is the sole authority responsible for announcing dates of national and provincial elections.

President Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, emphasized that any formal declaration regarding the elections would be made by the President. According to Magwenya, President Ramaphosa is expected to make the official announcement by February 23.
