The ANC Veterans League recently held its scheduled National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Kempton Park, Erkurhuleni. The congress, which began on Friday, July 28th, 2023, has come to a close today, July 30th, 2023. During this congress, new national leadership was elected to the ANC Veterans League.

The elected national officials are as follows:

– President: Snuki Zikalala
– Deputy President: Mavuso Msimang
– Secretary General: Ilva Mackay Langa
– Deputy SG: Connie September
– Treasurer General: Fazel Randera

Snuki Zikalala, a front-runner for the position of president, was elected unopposed during the congress. However, Tony Yengeni was barred from contesting against him.

The congress was officially opened by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula on Friday. In his opening address, Mbalula emphasized the importance of the Veterans League in providing guidance and advice to the governing party. He highlighted the challenges faced by the ANC in safeguarding its values and maintaining discipline.

Special guests at the congress included former ANC President Thabo Mbeki and the leader of the 1956 women’s march, Sophie De Bruyn. However, Mbalula arrived late, which reportedly irked former president Thabo Mbeki.

Today, President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the closing address at the congress, marking the end of this significant event.
