The African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane has received the greenlight from its national leadership to proceed with a motion of no confidence against the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led coalition in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. This motion, specifically targeting Mayor Cilliers Brink, comes amid accusations that he has failed to improve the state of the capital during his 18 months in office.
The ANC’s Tshwane leadership, headed by regional secretary George Matjila, confirmed that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had met and endorsed the motion, which is set to be tabled in council. The ANC is hopeful that this motion will successfully remove the DA-led administration, which has faced increasing scrutiny over service delivery failures, prolonged municipal strikes, and accusations of corruption.
Political Tension and Opposition
The DA has been quick to dismiss the motion as politically motivated, arguing that Brink has been working tirelessly to resolve many of the city’s longstanding issues, including service delivery backlogs and municipal workers’ strikes. Despite this, political alliances are shifting, with ActionSA announcing its support for the ANC’s motion, joining forces with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in a bid to unseat Brink.
The DA remains confident that the mayor will survive the motion, citing improvements in the city’s infrastructure and governance. The party plans to stage a protest outside the council chambers as the vote takes place, highlighting what they describe as a positive trajectory under Brink’s leadership.
Community Divisions and Public Sentiment
Opinions among Tshwane residents remain divided. Some residents have praised Brink for his efforts in improving service delivery, particularly following the strike by municipal workers. Others, however, feel that little has changed in the city, pointing to persistent issues such as broken streetlights, water shortages, and poorly maintained public spaces.
As the city braces for the outcome of this political battle, the future of the DA-led coalition hangs in the balance. The motion of no confidence is expected to shape the political dynamics in Tshwane for the foreseeable future, with both the ANC and the DA fighting for control over the capital city.
