By Thys Khiba – The African National Congress (ANC) secretary general FikileMbalula and ANC national executive committee (NEC) members met with the North West provincial executive committee (PEC) to make a call on whether or not the ANC Dr Kenneth Kaunda conference that elected Gaba Thithiba KaQhele as regional chair has to be rerun.
Mbalula indicated that the ANC is investigating the legitimacy of the party’s ‘fradulent’ regional conference.
The investigated and 9th regional conference took place on the weekend of the 9-10 June 2023 at Bona Bona Game Lodge near Wolmaransstaad.
This comes after disgruntled members of the party from the JB Marks local municipality and Matlosana local municipality alleged that the conference was fraudulent and manipulated by the provincial executive committee (PEC) members to give victory to a particular faction.
On Thursday night, Mbalula met with the party PEC to discuss amongst other issues, a ‘rigged’ regional conference of Dr Kenneth Kaunda region.
“Tonight, we met with the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the North West Province. This meeting serves as a follow up and consultation on matters affecting the North West Province,” said Mbalula.
Mbalula has directed party NEC members led by Convenor Soviet Lekganyane to conduct an immediate investigation on the validity, and legitimacy of the complaints or disputes.
“It has come to my attention that the regional conference of Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region that took place on the weekend of the 09-10 June 2023 was engulfed in challenges of registration and credentials report that was contested in plenary.
“I have also received complaints and disputes about how the conference was conducted by PEC members deployed to the above-mentioned conference,” said Mbalula.
Mbalula has directed the ANC members and provincial secretary Louis Diremelo in the province to put on hold the conference that was not concluded until the end of the investigation by the NEC members.
In a battle of national roads, Dr Kenneth Kaunda district municipality mayor, Nikiwe Julia Num faced off against her JB Marks local municipality mayor, Gaba Thithiba Ka Qhele for the chair position. The battle appeared to be a regional supremacy.
