ANC FREE STATE
Johannesburg, South Africa – The African National Congress (ANC) has successfully secured the Free State province with 51.94% of the vote in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, according to the preliminary results. The completion of the vote count, now at 100%, reflects both a win and a growing challenge for the ruling party.
In the 2019 elections, the ANC commanded a much stronger influence in the Free State, garnering a significant 61.14% of the vote. The recent results suggest a marked decline of nearly 10%, indicating mounting pressure from opposition parties.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have both made substantial inroads in the Free State. The DA received 21.85% of the vote, a slight increase from the 2019 elections where they secured 18.66%. The EFF, on the other hand, saw a rise from 12.07% in 2019 to 13.48% this year.
Nationally, the ANC is treading a more challenging path. Recent results show the party leading with 40.23%, prompting concerns as coalitions become inevitable. The DA stands firm in second place with 21.66%, closely followed by the MK Party with 14.73%. The EFF, although in fourth place nationally, has seen a moderate increase in support, securing 9.45%.
The voter turnout for this election cycle was 58.57%, with 98.46% of the vote counts completed. Out of 23,292 voting districts, 22,934 have been accounted for.
Yesterday, the ANC faced a setback in the Northern Cape, losing its majority after receiving just 49.47% of the vote. The DA continued to solidify its presence with 20.94%, while the EFF achieved 13.23%. These changes underscore the shifting political landscape in South Africa and highlight the pressure on the ANC as it tries to maintain its dominance.
Despite the stakes, the ANC’s scheduled media briefing in the Free State today at 12 pm was postponed, leaving supporters and political analysts awaiting further instruction and updates from the party.
This election is one of the most challenging for the ruling party as it contends with a national landscape increasingly leaning towards coalition governance. Analysts suggest that the electorate is becoming more discerning, demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders
