By Thys Khiba – Described as a humble, dependable and dedicated servant, former Metsimaholo Local Municipality Speaker, activist and African National Congress (ANC) Fezile Dabi Regional Secretary Thabo Mabasa-Sehlabo will be laid to rest on Sunday, 13 August 2023 at the Old Zamdela Cemetery in Sasolburg at 08:00.

Mabasa passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, 02 August, after being hospitalized following a short illness.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Fezile Dabi Region is devastated by the untimely passing of Comrade Thabo Mabasa, a Regional Secretary of the ANC in Fezile Dabi Region.

“Death has robbed our movement, the people of Fezile Dabi and the Free State of a humble, dependable and dedicated servant,” said ANC in a statement.

The ANC regional spokesperson Sello Pietersen confirmed the party will hold a memorial service for Mabasa at 14:00 on Thursday, 10 August 2023 at Nkgopoleng Secondary School in Zamdela, Sasolburg.

Pietersen said the service will be utilised to celebrate Mabasa’slife and reflect on his political legacy and contribution.

As we pay our last respect to this gallant revolutionary activist, who dedicated his life of selfless service to the people over the years, we commit to honour his revolutionary spirit with a befitting send off and recommit our resolve to advance the ideas which he represented,” said Pietersen.

Mabasa was also known as a political leader who admired CheGuevara.

The ANCYL in the region described Mabasa as a leader, friend, and mentor who enriched their lives in countless ways.

According to the ANCYL regional spokesperson Babiki Dewet, Mabasa was able to politically connect with young people.

“During his time as regional secretary, Comrade Mabasademonstrated exceptional political acumen and an unwavering commitment to the goals of the ANC.

“His insights and ability to connect with young people were instrumental in inspiring the next generation of leaders and fostering political consciousness,” said Dewet.

Meanwhile, the current Metsimaholo Speaker Lucas Fisher said the municipal, region and province were still expecting a lot of Mabasa’s contribution to the development and changing the lives of their people.

Fisher described Mabasa as one of the brightest rising political stars, committed regional and community leader.

“Death has robbed our municipality and the people of FezileDabi region a humble, dependable and dedicated servant. Mabasa was one of the most courageous and fearless councillors in our municipality since his youthful days,” said Fisher.

Doctor Tseeke, family spokesperson, said the family is devastated by the passing of their son, son-in-law, father, brother and a mentor to his children.

Tseeke described Mabasa as a father who had a credible andinspiring academic record.

We are devastated as a family… we have lost a great pillar ofthe entire life of Mabasa-Sehlabo. His presence in the life of his kids and the entire family was an epitome of life and confidence. So it is a great loss,” said Tseeke.

As an undergraduate of a Bachelors degree of the University ofWitwatersrand, Mabasa was currently studying a Bachelor of Arts with a Law focus.
