ANC, PAC, and AfriForum
By Mpho Moloi
The African National Congress (ANC) convened a pivotal meeting with AfriForum and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, to confront escalating tensions and safeguard South Africa’s economic interests. This dialogue follows months of disinformation campaigns led by AfriForum, a civil rights group representing Afrikaner interests, which had urged the United States to impose sanctions on President Cyril Ramaphosa and other ANC leaders. With South Africa’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) benefits hanging in the balance, the meeting signifies a critical effort to address the concerns of white South Africans and maintain the nation’s vital trade relationship with the U.S.
A Historic Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions
South Africa’s political landscape has been increasingly strained by AfriForum’s claims that white South Africans are under attack, coupled with accusations of discriminatory policies by the ANC. The group’s rejection of an asylum offer from former U.S. President Donald Trump and its international lobbying efforts have heightened fears that South Africa could lose its AGOA status—a trade agreement providing duty-free access to the U.S. market for over 1,800 products. In 2024 alone, South Africa exported $3.5 billion worth of goods under AGOA, underscoring its economic significance.
The ANC, recognizing the stakes, resolved earlier in 2025 to engage with AfriForum and its affiliate, Solidarity, to counter these narratives. The inclusion of the PAC, a former liberation movement with a legacy of advocating for African nationalism, as a facilitator in the talks adds a layer of historical weight to the proceedings. In a late-night statement, the ANC described the meeting as a platform to discuss “matters of common interest,” emphasizing that the talks were “robust and frank.” This dialogue reflects a collective commitment to tackling the nation’s challenges head-on.
AfriForum’s Allegations and the ANC’s Rebuttal
AfriForum has long asserted that white South Africans face targeted violence and systemic marginalization, claims it has amplified on the global stage. The group’s calls for U.S. sanctions against ANC leaders have fueled tensions, raising the specter of economic retaliation that could jeopardize South Africa’s AGOA eligibility. However, the ANC has firmly rejected these allegations, arguing that they constitute disinformation aimed at destabilizing the country.
In its post-meeting statement, the ANC underscored that “South Africans bear the collective responsibility of addressing challenges that confront the country.” The party highlighted the need to dispel falsehoods that have strained relations with key trade partners like the U.S. The PAC’s role in facilitating the dialogue further bridges ideological divides, signaling a unified approach to resolving these contentious issues.
AGOA Benefits: The Economic Imperative
The African Growth and Opportunity Act is a lifeline for South Africa’s economy, supporting industries such as agriculture, automotive, and textiles. Losing AGOA status would result in significant job losses and economic downturn, particularly with the agreement set to expire in September 2025. The U.S. Congress has yet to decide on its renewal, making the ANC’s engagement with AfriForum a strategic move to bolster South Africa’s case.
The meeting on 6 May 2025 is a direct response to these economic threats. By addressing AfriForum’s concerns and countering disinformation, the ANC aims to preserve South Africa’s trade advantages and demonstrate stability to international partners. The organizations involved have identified key issues and committed to resolving them, though specific details remain under wraps.
