Sekhukhune District Municipality on EPWP

The ANC-led Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) announced on Thursday that all Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers’ contracts would be terminated effective 1 July 2024. This decision comes just a day after the election, raising eyebrows among the workers and the local community.

The notification was conveyed through a formal letter written by the municipal manager, Meshach Kgwale. The letter states, “The letter serves to remind all EPWP Beneficiaries that the EPWP Agreements with the SDM will automatically terminate on the 30™ June 2024 and nobody should report for work effectively from 01 July 2024. We would like to thank you for the service you have rendered and wish you good luck for the future employment.”

Workers Feel Betrayed and Used

The sudden termination notice has sparked outrage among the EPWP beneficiaries, many of whom had actively campaigned for the ANC in the recently concluded elections. Allegations have surfaced that workers were led to believe they would be made permanent employees of the municipality, heightening the sense of betrayal among them.

One worker who preferred to remain anonymous said, “We feel used by the ANC. We worked tirelessly during the campaign with the hope of job security, only to be shown the door the day after the elections.”

Employment Uncertainty Looms

With the contracts scheduled to end on 30 June 2024, the immediate concern for many workers is the uncertainty surrounding their future employment. The EPWP was considered a lifeline for numerous families, providing them with much-needed income and a sense of purpose. The abrupt cancellation has left many in a state of despair, scrambling to find alternative employment.
