ANC Free State
In a recent statement, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has officially distanced itself from a poster circulating online that suggests their involvement in a planned provincial shutdown. The shutdown, expected to occur on 11 September 2024, has caused significant concern among citizens, businesses, and government entities. However, the ANC has categorically denied any affiliation with the organisers of this disruptive event.
Provincial Secretary Polediso Motsoeneng emphasized that the ANC has not engaged with any organisation concerning a shutdown and urged the people of Mangaung to disregard the call for action. The party made it clear that it does not endorse the shutdown, as such activities threaten to undermine efforts to stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and foster community well-being. Motsoeneng reassured citizens that the ANC remains committed to addressing public grievances through legal and constructive means, advocating for dialogue between leadership and the community to resolve concerns.
The ANC also expressed concern over opportunistic groups attempting to exploit genuine community frustrations for selfish interests. According to Motsoeneng, actions like these disrupt daily routines, negatively impact small businesses and vendors who rely on daily trade, and jeopardise the livelihoods of many families in the Free State.
The statement from the ANC comes in response to a letter from Tumelo Mafereka, Secretary of the Mangaung Region shutdown movement. The letter, addressed to various entities, including residents, churches, schools, and businesses, called for a province-wide shutdown to demand better job opportunities, housing, and improved service delivery. The movement’s letter also contained warnings against those allegedly protecting drug dealers and illegal immigrants, stating that the shutdown would continue until their demands are met.
This shutdown movement has gained traction in the region, with growing concerns over local governance and service delivery failures. However, the ANC has reiterated its position that any protest action should follow the legal framework and not devolve into lawlessness or violence.
The police and local authorities have taken note of the rising tensions. Law enforcement agencies, including the ProvJoints, have appealed for calm and assured the public that any acts of hooliganism or violence would be dealt with swiftly. The Free State government has also urged all parties to focus on constructive dialogue to address the region’s issues, rather than resorting to disruptive actions.
This response from the ANC in the Free State mirrors similar actions taken by the ANC in other provinces, where the party has had to distance itself from groups attempting to link it with shutdown activities aimed at destabilising communities. This trend of distancing, which has been seen in regions like KwaZulu-Natal and Hammanskraal, underscores the ANC’s focus on law and order during these turbulent times.
