ANC Free State Provincial Secretary Polediso Motsoeneng Involved in Car Accident on N5, Now Stable

In a worrying incident that has left party members and supporters concerned, African National Congress Free State Provincial Secretary Comrade Polediso Motsoeneng was involved in a motor vehicle accident on the N5 road outside Paul Roux on Monday afternoon, 29 September 2025. The crash happened as he travelled back from an ANC Provincial Working Committee meeting in Bethlehem, highlighting the dangers of one of the province’s busiest highways.

Motsoeneng, a key figure in the party’s structures, sustained moderate injuries but is now in stable condition after quick action by emergency teams. This event adds to the growing list of road tragedies in Free State, where the N5 has a history of deadly collisions involving trucks and cars, often due to high speeds and heavy traffic.

As South Africans reflect on the risks of daily travel, especially for public servants on the move, the ANC has thanked first responders for their swift help. With the province recording high fatality rates on major roads like the N5, calls are mounting for better safety measures to protect everyone. This article looks at the details of the accident, Motsoeneng’s role in the ANC, the response from the party, the N5’s troubled history, community reactions, and steps to prevent future mishaps.

The Accident: Quick Response Saves the Day

The mishap occurred on the N5, a key route linking Bethlehem and other towns, known for its mix of fast cars and slow trucks. Motsoeneng was heading back from the ANC meeting when the vehicle crashed. A QwaQwa Government ambulance, on its way from Bloemfontein, happened to be nearby and stopped to help. They stabilised him at the scene before rushing him to Mediclinic Bethlehem for more checks.

The ANC Free State shared in a statement: “The African National Congress in the Free State confirms that Provincial Secretary, Cde Polediso Motsoeneng, was involved in a motor vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on the N5 outside Paul Roux from the ANC PWC meeting in Bethlehem. Cde Motsoeneng was stabilised at the scene by a QwaQwa Government ambulance that was en route from Bloemfontein and transported to Mediclinic Bethlehem. He sustained moderate injuries and is undergoing further medical assessment. At this stage, his condition is stable.”

No other details on the crash cause or other vehicles came out yet, but police are likely looking into it. Such accidents on the N5 often tie to overtaking gone wrong or driver fatigue on long hauls.

Who is Polediso Motsoeneng: A Key ANC Figure in Free State

As Provincial Secretary, Motsoeneng plays a big role in running the ANC’s day-to-day in Free State, handling admin, member issues, and party plans. He’s been a strong voice in local politics, pushing for better services and unity in a province with tough spots like poverty and farm woes. His work in meetings like the PWC helps shape how the ANC tackles challenges, from jobs to health.

This accident hits close for the party, coming amid busy times with national talks on unity and growth. Friends and colleagues have sent well-wishes, hoping for his quick return to duties.

Party’s Response: Gratitude and Updates Promised

Provincial Spokesperson Thabo Meeko put out the statement, thanking the medics: “We extend our sincere gratitude to the first responders and medical teams for their swift and professional assistance. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.”

The ANC has rallied around Motsoeneng, with members sharing support online and in groups. This shows the close ties in the party, where leaders like him are seen as key to keeping things strong on the ground.
The N5’s Troubled History: A Road Plagued by Crashes

The N5 has a sad rep for bad accidents, with past wrecks claiming lives and hurting many. In April 2012, a man died when hit by a car near Paul Roux, showing the dangers for walkers too. February 2022 saw teachers and school board members from Sekoko Primary School perish in a crash on the same road after a workshop, much like Motsoeneng’s trip.

November 2021 brought a truck losing its load between Paul Roux and Senekal, causing chaos, while another smash near Paul Roux that month killed one and hurt others. These events tie to factors like poor visibility, speeding, and truck overloads on a route busy with long-haul drivers.

Free State’s roads overall see high death rates, with over 300 fatalities yearly from similar causes. Calls for better signs, speed cameras, and patrols have grown, but changes come slow.
