*MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATION TO ALL THOSE ELECTED TO SERVE AT THE REC AND THANK YOU TO DELEGATES AND EVERYONE WHO ENSURE THAT FEZILE DABI REGIONAL CONFERENCE IS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS*

By Thabo Mabasa Sehlabo

Let me take this opportunity to most sincerely congratulate the newly elected leadership collective under the stewardship of the Cde Victoria de Beers-Mthombeni.

Special congratulations to the delegates who resolved to eradicate all forms of factionalism, disunity, character assassinations and other negative tendencies within our movement. We are exceedingly proud of our former IRC who worked tirelessly to ensure that we work in unison towards the renewal and unity of the Organisation in the Region also, we are very excited about the election of  young people to serve in this committee, who by implication therefore reflect our deep-rooted conviction that young people have potential to enliven ANC.

Again, we have taken note and acknowledge with optimism the growing number of young women elected in strategic positions to serve in this committee, those who are young by age and or are from the ranks of youth movement. This is very encouraging indeed, and we are very, very proud of them, because in the words of Mao Tse-Tung: _*”Learn from the masses, and then teach them. Let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend.”*_

A cursory glance over the history of the ANC shows how young people, at different stages in the pursuance of the struggle, played a pivotal role in revitalising the movement and redirecting it to respond to challenges.

It was, after all, young people of the 1940s who revolutionised the ANC. It was the youth of 1976 who re-invigorated the movement following the lull after the Rivonia Trial, and it was the young lions of the 1980s who were fearless in the face of PW Botha’s total onslaught.

Motivated by renewal and relevance to its realities, the leadership of the ANC – the Reverends ZR Mahabane and James Calata – advocated for the leadership of youth. Out of this context would emerge the bright young African medical doctor, Alfred Bitini Xuma.

His leadership of the movement ushered in reforms in the organisation, particularly with regard to its structure.

The ANC, at this time, grew its membership. It was also at this time that young members of Congress, such as Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela were enabled space to flourish. The ability of Xuma, as president of the ANC, to give room to the youth played an important role in rejuvenating the organisation.

It was this particular quality and characteristic that impressed Oliver Tambo.

Consequently, he sought to emulate Xuma by nurturing young talent who existed in the movement during his tenure as its president. Many of those who became, and are still, leaders of our movement and country are a product of this development. The tradition of investing in the youth in the movement has continued to this day.

We therefore trust that with all the skills, commitment, discipline and energy they posses they will make a difference as part of the collective to advance the aspirations of the broader society and the poor in particular.

In conclusion, as we ponder the challenges posed by our past, we implore every single member of the ANC to be lifelong students of the *revolution*

Good leaders are good students. They do not cease to learn! Leaders, just like activists and revolutionaries, always remain students of the Revolution. They do not veer away from its doctrine.

Subsequently, the following six points are what leaders who are revolution inclined, do not miss out . . .

[1] Good leaders do not lose their curiosity! They throw themselves into what they do! They do not spare themselves! Everything goes into the basket of their knowledge for better execution!

[2] Astute leaders make their job a calling and not a career! In this way they will derive joy and passion in what they do!

[3] Astute leaders do not want to grow alone. They help others to rise too. They help to build a future for the next person and generations!

[4] They do not strive to accept honour in what they do but a responsibility to mankind – the electorate, so to say!

[5] Such leaders allow the youth to come out and achieve a level of greatness of proportion to the whole, for the stage belongs to them! They must be nurtured and not destroyed.

[6] Lastly, leaders invest in the youth and their education.

The above six points, should be lessons that leaders learn and refine everyday of their leadership lifespan.

Finally, leadership is not only for elected people! So, be a leader without a position wherever you are.

Lead us Cde Victoria!!!
