ANC Extends KZN Provincial Task Team
In a move aimed at maintaining stability amid ongoing organisational challenges, the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has resolved to extend the mandate of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team (PTT) beyond its original expiry date. The decision, communicated in a letter from Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula dated 2 December 2025, allows the PTT to continue functioning until the next NEC meeting determines further steps for the province, expected before the end of February 2026. This extension comes as the ANC prepares for its 5th National General Council (NGC) from 8 to 11 December 2025 at the Birchwood Hotel in Gauteng, where key issues like renewal and leadership will be on the agenda.
The PTT, appointed on 25 February 2025 to oversee the reconfiguration of the KZN provincial leadership, was set to expire on 25 November 2025. Its prolongation reflects the party’s efforts to address internal divisions and rebuild structures in one of its key strongholds, following the dissolution of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) earlier in the year. As South Africa heads into the festive season, this step underscores the ANC’s focus on unity ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
The Letter: Formal Extension Under ANC Constitution
Mbalula’s letter to PTT Coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu, with a copy to Convener of NEC Deployees Dickson Masemola, invokes Rule 12.2.4 of the ANC Constitution. This rule empowers the NEC to suspend or dissolve a PEC if necessary and appoint an interim structure for up to nine months. “The mandate of the ANC PTT which was appointed on the 25th February 2025 expired on 25th November 2025,” the letter states. It explains that in a special meeting on 1 December 2025, the NEC decided to extend the PTT’s role until it can decide on further interventions at its next gathering.
The document stresses the need for the PTT to ensure provincial, regional, and branch structures function democratically and effectively. During suspensions, the NEC may appoint an interim structure for three months, extendable if needed. This extension aims to give time for proper assessment before major changes.

Background on KZN PTT: From Formation to Extension
The KZN PTT was established in February 2025 following the NEC’s decision to dissolve the PEC due to leadership failures and internal conflicts. The reconfiguration was a “decisive intervention to reinforce our structures and renew the movement,” as stated in ANC announcements at the time. The PTT’s inauguration was a high-profile event attended by top leaders, aimed at rebuilding the party ahead of elections.
Throughout 2025, the PTT held key events like a two-day Political School in September at the Royal Hotel in Durban, where President Thabo Mbeki was the main presenter. The school produced a declaration reaffirming commitment to unity and renewal. These activities show the PTT’s active role in stabilising the province.
The extension aligns with broader ANC efforts, as seen in similar reconfigurations in provinces like the Western Cape in October 2025 and Gauteng earlier in the year. In Gauteng, the PTT provided updates on preparations for 2026 local elections, emphasising consolidation.
Link to Upcoming NGC: Focus on Renewal and Organisational Matters
The timing of the extension is notable, coming just days before the ANC’s 5th NGC from 8 to 11 December 2025. Themed “The Year of Renewal: Making the ANC a More Effective Instrument of the People to Achieve the Vision of the Freedom Charter,” the NGC will assess progress since the 2022 national conference, including organisational renewal and ethical leadership.
Secretary-General Mbalula has dismissed rumours of leadership challenges, calling for members to close ranks against “dark forces” seeking to divide the party. The KZN extension ensures continuity until the NGC or next NEC can address provincial issues fully. Documents for the NGC, available on the ANC website, emphasise renewal to advance the Freedom Charter’s goals.
Implications for ANC in KZN: Stability Ahead of 2026 Elections
KZN remains a crucial battleground for the ANC, with strong competition from parties like the MK Party and IFP. The PTT’s extension provides breathing room to resolve internal matters without rushed changes. Analysts note that this prevents potential disruptions close to the NGC, allowing focus on national priorities.
However, it also highlights ongoing challenges in KZN, where factionalism has persisted. The PTT’s work, including political schools and community engagements, aims to rebuild trust and mobilise support for upcoming polls.
Public and Party Reactions: Calls for Unity and Renewal
ANC members and supporters have welcomed the extension as a step towards stability. Social media posts from party accounts stress the need for unity, with one stating, “Together we are strong, and together, we can succeed.” Critics, however, question if it delays needed reforms.
