AMCU rubbishes hostage claims by NUM

By Thys Khiba

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union(AMCU) General Secretary Jeff Mphahlele has poured cold water on claims made by the National Union of Mineworkers(NUM) that AMCU has allegedly held “hostage” at least 540mineworkers of Gold One’s Modder East mine in Springs.

Mphahlele disagreed that the workers were held against their will and prevented from leaving after the shift.

“We still maintain this was not a hostage situation. This was a concerted effort of workers and members that were working night shift,” said Mphahlele.

NUM made a number of claims about AMCU alleging that nine of its members had been injured when they were “assaulted by the hooligans who were preventing them from coming to the surface.

Earlier this week, AMCU dismissed the allegations and said the workers had remained underground as part of a protest.

The ongoing conflict is related to union representation, with miners who have been signed up to NUM by default, seeking representation from the AMCU.

The affected mine has succeeded in interdicting a strike of AMCU and NUM on Monday.

The Labour Court interdict prohibits the detention of Gold One employees underground, prohibits striking workers from preventing non-striking workers from entering or leaving the company’s premises, and prohibits protestors from damaging Gold One’s property.

Meanwhile, at least 200 of the 540 miners returned to the surface after being underground for two nights amid an alleged hostage of rival labour unions.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jonathan Hericourt told SAFM; “a large group of them [miners] have started to come to surface. We don’t know what’s happening with the rest of the people.”

A family member who wants to remain anonymous indicated that his cousin is affected and is still underground without water and food.
