Betway Premiership
By Sello Masilo
AmaZulu FC emerged as 2-0 winners over Marumo Gallants in a Betway Premiership match played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday night. The victory propelled Usuthu to sixth place in the league standings, securing their seventh win of the season.
The KwaZulu-Natal side will now shift their focus to their Nedbank Cup Last 16 fixture against Marumo Gallants, scheduled for 15 February in the Free State. Meanwhile, Gallants suffered their ninth league defeat of the campaign, keeping them in 13th place. Coach Dan Malesela will be determined to turn things around and seek revenge in the upcoming cup match.
Dominant AmaZulu Clinch Crucial Victory
AmaZulu entered the match with the intent to dominate, with Tshepang Moremi and Rowan Human causing problems for the Gallants defence from the first whistle. The duo’s attacking movement forced Gallants onto the back foot, creating multiple scoring opportunities.
In the 18th minute, Moremi was unfortunate not to put AmaZulu ahead. The pacey winger saw his shot strike the woodwork, with goalkeeper Washington Arubi well-beaten.
However, Usuthu’s pressure eventually paid off just before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Moremi turned provider, setting up Rowan Human, who calmly slotted the ball past Arubi with a composed finish. AmaZulu took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Wayde Jooste Seals Win for Usuthu
Unlike many teams that sit back after gaining a lead, AmaZulu came out stronger in the second half, continuing to press high and attack. Their persistence was rewarded in the 60th minute when Wayde Jooste doubled their advantage.
The experienced full-back headed home a well-placed cross from Riaan Hanamub, leaving Arubi with no chance. The goal gave Usuthu a comfortable 2-0 cushion, with Gallants struggling to respond.
Coach Dan Malesela attempted to salvage the game by making attacking substitutions, introducing Sekela Sithole and Thapelo Mokobodi with eight minutes remaining. However, AmaZulu’s defence stood firm, and Gallants failed to create clear-cut chances.
Ultimately, Usuthu held on to secure a convincing 2-0 win, claiming all three points on home soil.
