Alleged Military Training Facility Uncovered in Limpopo

Military Training In Limpopo

Modimolle, Limpopo – A suspected military training base has been uncovered in Modimolle, Limpopo, following a raid by law enforcement agencies on Friday, 8 August 2024. The operation, spearheaded by the Polokwane-based Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, was a coordinated effort involving Public Order Policing (POP), the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Modimolle Vispol.

The raid resulted in the seizure of several firearms and ammunition, raising concerns about the nature of activities conducted at the facility. Hawks spokesperson, Lethunya Mmuroa, confirmed the confiscation of “licensed rifles, pistol, and ammunition believed to be used during training.” While the exact purpose of the training remains unclear, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of military-related activities.

“The manner in which firearms and ammunition landed at the farm is still under investigation. No one was arrested,” Mmuroa added, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation. The discovery has sparked significant concern among local communities and law enforcement, given the potential implications of unregulated military-style training in the area.

Connection to White River Discovery

This raid comes shortly after a similar incident in White River, Mpumalanga, where an illegal military training base was uncovered. In that case, authorities discovered a range of military-grade weapons and sophisticated equipment, used for training purposes, further fuelling concerns about the spread of illegal paramilitary activities within South Africa.

The White River operation led to several arrests and the confiscation of military uniforms, assault rifles, and communication devices. The discovery in Modimolle now raises questions about the possible connections between these two operations. Both cases involve remote locations being used as training grounds, where individuals are allegedly receiving training in firearms and combat tactics.
