Alex 89.1 FM property is damaged

Johannesburg – The Johannesburg community radio station, Alex FM confirmed that they were targeted and looted due to numerous protests of action around their area in the early hours of the morning, 13 June 2021. 

“Studio equipment, computers, and furniture worth millions has been looted during this incident, and the whole 4th floor ransacked and turned upside down,” said Alex FM Board Chairperson, Isaac Mangena.

The property of the station is reported to be damaged and radio equipment has been stolen from the radio station. 

“Due to these unfortunate events, Alex FM will not be able to operate. Therefore, this leads to the closing of the radio station for an indefinite period till further notice,” said the statement.

The station confirmed that they are investigating and monitoring the situation.

The Alex FM indicated that they will communicate further if they are any developments regarding the station. 

“Alex FM would like to advice you all to stay safe and don’t forget to sanitize, wash your hands and wear your masks.” 

Meanwhile, various integral sites across Alexandra, which includes shops, schools, malls, spaza shops, funeral parlours have been affected by looting.

“I received frantic calls on Sunday from staff members who were scared that the rioters will come upstairs where Alex FM is broadcasting from. I assured them that I will call the cops with the help if the Station manager,” said Mangena.
