Aldrich Potgieter Makes History as Youngest South African to Win on PGA Tour at Rocket Classic

Aldrich Potgieter

Aldrich Potgieter has become the youngest South African ever to win on the PGA Tour after storming to victory at the Rocket Classic with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole at Detroit Golf Club.

Twenty‑year‑old Potgieter, the youngest player on the PGA Tour, secured his maiden title in dramatic fashion by sinking a clutch birdie on the fifth playoff hole to beat American Max Greyserman, following Chris Kirk’s earlier exit . The trio had finished the regulation 72 holes tied at 266, an impressive 22‑under‑par. Potgieter had surged into contention by equalling the course record with a superb 62 on Thursday, making him one of only six players—including Kevin Roy—to do so .

Born on 13 September 2004 in Mossel Bay, Potgieter turned pro in mid‑2023 after a standout amateur career that included winning the 2022 Amateur Championship at 17 . He previously made history by becoming the youngest Korn Ferry Tour winner in January 2024 .

Entering the Rocket Classic’s final round with a two‑shot lead, Potgieter fired a closing 69 to lock in a playoff . Chris Kirk was eliminated early after a second‑hole bogey before Potgieter edged out Greyserman with a composed birdie from 18 feet . At just 20 years, nine months and 16 days, he became the seventh‑youngest PGA Tour winner since 1983 and the youngest ever representing South Africa .

His victory earned him US$1.728 million and 500 FedEx Cup points—an incredible return for a rookie in just his 20th PGA Tour start .

Rookie compatriot Thriston Lawrence also impressed, finishing tied for eighth, just three shots adrift of Potgieter—his fellow South African making fast inroads on golf’s top circuit .

Louis Oosthuizen Falls Short in LIV Golf Dallas Playoff

In LIV Golf tournament action at Dallas, Louis Oosthuizen came agonisingly close to victory but was edged out in a four‑man playoff. American Patrick Reed claimed his first individual LIV title by sinking a clutch birdie putt on the first extra hole . Reed, who started the final round with a three‑stroke lead, held off Paul Casey and Jinichiro Kozuma before Oosthuizen’s tee shot found water at the playoff’s first hole. Reed’s up‑and‑down approach paved the way for victory, ending his 41‑event wait on the circuit
