Free State Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring has raised serious concerns over the alarming increase in rape incidents where women are raped while under the influence of liquor or other substances. The rise in such cases has prompted the police to urge the community to join efforts in curbing these crimes through heightened awareness and preventive measures.

Warrant Officer Mophiring revealed that a disturbing number of rape cases have been reported at various police stations across the province. “The community is urged to stop walking alone late at night, especially in open and dark areas,” he said. “Avoid open and unlit spaces and streets with vacant houses. It is advisable to use alcohol responsibly and in the company of trustworthy people. It is also a good idea to arrange for safe transport to your home after enjoying a night out. Make sure the house is locked after arriving home, as some victims wake up to find a perpetrator raping them.”

Key Safety Measures and Advice

The police have highlighted several key safety measures to help prevent these incidents:

1. Avoid Walking Alone at Night: Most victims are targeted while walking home at night from drinking places. Women are also attacked while going to toilets at these venues or followed to their homes by suspects.
2. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Related Cases: Warrant Officer Mophiring noted that some cases involve boyfriends or ex-boyfriends forcing themselves on victims, which is a criminal offense. Women should avoid visiting the homes of ex-boyfriends or acquaintances under any pretense, as this can create opportunities for rape. Sexual intercourse should not be seen as payment for a night out or drinks.
3. Underage Drinking: An increase in rape cases involving minors has been reported, with some victims being highly intoxicated and unable to remember their attackers. Tavern owners are urged to adhere to liquor sale regulations, prohibiting underage patrons and stopping sales to overly intoxicated individuals.
4. Minors Alone at Home: Some victims have reported being raped by stepfathers or family members. Parents should not leave minors unsupervised at home, and neighbours are encouraged to report any such incidents to protect children from falling victim to rape and other crimes.

Reporting Rape Cases

The police urge victims to report rape incidents immediately to their nearest police station. Warrant Officer Mophiring assured that victims will be privately interviewed in a victim-friendly facility to help them feel comfortable and provide as much evidence as possible to assist in the arrest of suspects.

“Victims must also be reminded that sexual intercourse should not be viewed as payment for a night out or drinks,” added Mophiring.
