Al Ahly President Mahmoud El Khatib has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Coach Pitso Mosimane, who will be honoured with an honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Thursday. This recognition underscores Mosimane’s exceptional contributions to football and his relentless efforts in championing African football on a global stage.
El Khatib’s Congratulatory Message
In a recent statement, Al Ahly confirmed that “Mahmoud El Khatib, our president, received a generous invitation from Pitso Mosimane, former manager of Al Ahly, to attend a ceremony, honouring the South African coach and awarding him an honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg on 24 July, in recognition of his successful football career.”
Mosimane’s invitation highlighted the strong bond he shares with El Khatib and expressed his hope for El Khatib’s presence at this prestigious occasion. El Khatib expressed his gratitude for the invitation and his deep appreciation for Mosimane, whom he considers one of Africa’s most distinguished coaches. Regrettably, due to a medical journey, El Khatib will not be able to attend the ceremony. Nevertheless, he conveyed his best wishes to Mosimane for this significant honour.
University of Johannesburg’s Announcement
The University of Johannesburg announced in March that Mosimane would be one of five dignitaries receiving honorary doctorates during this year’s graduation season. This award recognises Mosimane’s notable success as both a football player and coach, and his unwavering dedication to advancing African football.

Pitso Mosimane’s coaching career is nothing short of illustrious. With a remarkable collection of 19 trophies, including the South African Football Association Coach of the Year award, five PSL Coach of the Season awards, and the CAF Coach of the Year award in 2016, Mosimane has consistently demonstrated his exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. His ability to inspire and motivate teams to perform at their best has set him apart in the football community.

Mosimane has been a vocal advocate for the potential and quality of African football. He has consistently called for equal opportunities and recognition for African players in global football. His outspoken advocacy has highlighted the immense talent pool in Africa and emphasised the need for increased investment and development in the continent’s football infrastructure.

In addition to his coaching achievements, Mosimane continues to contribute to the development of African football through the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools. Professor Bettine van Vuuren, Registrar at UJ, stressed the importance of honorary degrees, stating, “An Honorary Doctorate serves as recognition for individuals who have made substantial contributions to a particular field or have offered exceptional service to society, closely aligning with the University’s vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives.”
