Al Ahly
Al Ahly have parted ways with coach Marcel Koller after being knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns. The Egyptian giants announced the decision on Saturday, 26 April 2025, a day after their semi-final elimination on the away goals rule. The second leg in Cairo ended 1-1, following a goalless draw in Pretoria. A late own goal by Yasser Ibrahim in the 90th minute allowed Sundowns to advance to the final, ending Al Ahly’s hopes of a third consecutive title.
A Tumultuous End to a Successful Tenure
Marcel Koller, who took over as head coach in September 2022, enjoyed a highly successful spell with Al Ahly. Under his leadership, the club secured 11 trophies, including two CAF Champions League titles, the Egyptian Premier League, Egypt Cup, and multiple Super Cups. His tenure also saw Al Ahly reach the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2023.
Despite these achievements, recent performances had raised concerns. Al Ahly managed only two wins in their last nine matches and had slipped to second place in the Egyptian Premier League. The semi-final exit from the CAF Champions League, particularly the manner of the defeat, intensified scrutiny. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction by throwing water bottles at Koller as he left the pitch in Cairo, highlighting the mounting pressure on the Swiss coach.
Defensive Tactics Under Fire
Koller’s tactical approach in the second leg drew criticism. After taking a 1-0 lead through Taher Mohamed in the first half, Al Ahly adopted a defensive posture, aiming to protect their advantage. However, this strategy backfired when a late own goal leveled the match, allowing Sundowns to progress on away goals.
In the post-match press conference, Koller defended his tactics, stating, “We were leading 1-0 and of course we won’t all run to the front and attack – a 1-0 was going to be enough. Hence, we tried to defend well. In the end, we didn’t expect the own goal, but it meant it wasn’t enough.”
Sundowns’ Perspective
Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach, Miguel Cardoso, attributed their success to trust and belief in their game plan. “Trust, trust, no doubt, trust – on the way we have been loving this experience together, trust in the quality in each other, trust in the game plan we developed for the match,” Cardoso said.
He acknowledged Al Ahly’s defensive approach, noting that their caution was understandable given their recent record against Sundowns. “I was surprised but I understand [why they were defensive] if you look in the last nine matches, they have not won Sundowns, they had to be careful,” he added.
Al Ahly’s Official Statement
In their official statement, Al Ahly emphasized the amicable nature of Koller’s departure. “Due to the emergency circumstances and in light of the distinguished relationship that has been reflected in numerous previous positions, the club is currently negotiating with the coach to terminate the contract by mutual consent in a … statement read.
