Cape Town — AgriSA has warmly congratulated John Steenhuisen on his recent appointment as the Minister of Agriculture and Mzwanele Nyhontso as the Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development in the seventh administration. The agricultural sector giant expressed its optimism in fostering a productive partnership with the newly minted ministers to advance South Africa’s agricultural and land reform agendas.
AgriSA’s Vision for a Thriving Agricultural Sector
In a statement released on Monday, AgriSA CEO Johann Kotzé emphasized the importance of these appointments at what he described as “a critical juncture.” Kotzé voiced the organisation’s confidence in the new ministers’ ability to propel the agricultural sector towards becoming an even more substantial pillar of the South African economy.
“Under these Ministers’ leadership, the agricultural sector will thrive and continue to be a cornerstone of the national economy,” said Kotzé.
AgriSA’s Strategic Focus Areas
Kotzé further highlighted AgriSA’s commitment to supporting the new government of national unity (GNU) by engaging with all stakeholders through a unified approach to overcoming the sector’s challenges. To this end, AgriSA is concentrating on three essential areas:
Food Security
“Ensuring food security for all South Africans is paramount,” Kotzé noted. By enhancing agricultural productivity, sustainability, and profitability, AgriSA aims to contribute to social stability. The organisation pledges to back policies and initiatives that ensure access to safe, affordable, and nutritious food for everyone.
Economic Contribution
Agriculture remains a vital contributor to the South African economy. Kotzé revealed AgriSA’s resolve to collaborate closely with the government to elevate South African agriculture’s global competitiveness, boost exports, and open new markets. “This could lead to rural community development and significantly affect poverty and unemployment reduction,” he said.
Sustainability
Sustainable agriculture is key to conserving the environment. AgriSA is dedicated to advocating for policies and practices that safeguard and enhance natural resources for future generations. According to Kotzé, “By being responsible stewards of our natural resources, we can ensure that the agricultural sector remains viable and productive in the long term.”
Gratitude to Outgoing Minister Thoko Didiza
Kotzé also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister, Thoko Didiza, for her sustained support and understanding of the agricultural sector. He praised Didiza for fostering robust relationships with organised agriculture, which have led to significant advancements and stronger collaboration between the government and the farming community.
“We wish her all the best in her position as Speaker [of the National Assembly] and thank her for her dedicated service and the positive impact she has made,” Kotzé said.
