Johannesburg, 5 July 2024 – The path to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been laid out for Bafana Bafana. The draw for the qualifiers, held in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon, revealed the teams South Africa will face in their bid to reach the prestigious continental tournament.
Bafana Bafana, fresh off their bronze medal finish in the last AFCON, have been placed in Group K. They will compete against Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan to secure their spot in the 35th edition of the biennial event.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) delegation at the draw included President Dr. Danny Jordaan, Vice Presidents Anastasia Tsichlas and Linda Zwane, and CEO Lydia Monyepao. The event, hosted in Randburg, was attended by football dignitaries and enthusiasts.
“This draw is different from previous draws. The teams are more spread out, creating more groups and increasing the number of participating teams,” said Dr. Jordaan. “I think there are going to be quite some interesting results. We must not just look at the teams; there are going to be some surprising outcomes. For ourselves, I think we must focus on winning the games at home and ensure we qualify. Building consistency in Bafana Bafana’s performance is crucial.”
Coach Hugo Broos’ squad will aim to finish in the top two of their group to secure a place in the tournament, which will be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
A Look at Bafana Bafana’s Opponents
Uganda: Known for their resilience and tactical discipline, Uganda will be a formidable opponent. Their recent performances in international competitions have shown significant improvement, and they will be eager to make their mark.
Congo: With a mix of experienced players and young talent, Congo poses a balanced challenge. Their physical style of play and strong defensive strategies make them a team to watch out for.
South Sudan: The underdogs of the group, South Sudan, are relatively new to the international football scene. However, their passion and determination could lead to surprising results.
SAFA’s Optimism
The SAFA leadership expressed optimism about the upcoming qualifiers. Dr. Jordaan emphasised the importance of home victories and maintaining consistent performance levels. “We look forward to this campaign and hope that Bafana Bafana will qualify,” he added.
