Adv Tebogo Motlanthe

Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe has returned to the South African Football Association (SAFA) as the new Chief Operations Officer (COO). This marks a significant return to the association, filling a critical position that has been vacant since May 2023.

Background and Departure

Advocate Motlanthe originally joined SAFA in January 2021 as the CEO after serving as the legal officer for the organisation. His tenure was marked by a commitment to strengthening SAFA’s administrative framework and legal integrity. Notably, he played a pivotal role in defending the association against the Fli-Afrika complaint, a legal battle that ended favourably for SAFA.

However, in May 2023, Motlanthe resigned from his position as CEO, citing personal reasons. Sources indicated that his resignation was influenced by internal challenges and a lack of sufficient support within the organisation . His departure prompted an emergency executive meeting and led to Lydia Monyepao’s elevation to the role of CEO.

Return to SAFA

Motlanthe’s return to SAFA as COO has been warmly welcomed by SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan. In a recent statement, Dr Jordaan expressed his enthusiasm for Motlanthe’s return, noting his deep understanding of SAFA’s operations and his vision for the future. Dr Jordaan stated, “The position of COO has been entrenched at SAFA but was vacant, so we are happy that Adv Motlanthe has agreed to return. We want to make sure that we have winning national teams, strengthen schools sport, and also work on the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup bid.”

Advocate Motlanthe also shared his excitement about rejoining the team at SAFA House. He remarked, “I am happy to be back and part of a collective that is working on making SAFA a world-class organisation.”
