Nobuhle Mthembu of ActionSA has been elected as the new Speaker of the Johannesburg City Council on Wednesday. Mthembu secured her position with 180 votes, defeating the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidate, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, who garnered 68 votes. Her election follows the recent resignation of Margaret Arnolds, who was appointed as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance by the newly elected mayor, Dada Morero.

This election is part of a broader political deal between ActionSA and the African National Congress (ANC), which recently saw the resignation of former mayor Kabelo Gwamanda. The agreement included ActionSA supporting Morero’s election in exchange for securing the speaker position. Mthembu, in her acceptance speech, emphasized her commitment to transparency, accountability, and restoring Johannesburg to its “former glory,” with a strong focus on service delivery and tackling corruption.

Dada Morero, who previously served as the Finance MMC, was elected as the new mayor of Johannesburg on August 16, 2024. His election came amid significant political maneuvering within the Johannesburg City Council, reflecting the volatile nature of the city’s governance over the past two years. Mthembu’s election as the third speaker in two years underscores the ongoing instability within the council.

Mthembu’s immediate priorities include addressing the city’s billing crisis, improving the inner city’s conditions, and working closely with the administration to enforce the law and protect residents. She has also called on Mayor Morero to take decisive action against corruption and the mismanagement of funds within the city.
