In a landmark political move, ActionSA’s Dr Nasiphi Moya is set to become the next mayor of Tshwane after a late-night agreement with the African National Congress (ANC). The two parties reached a consensus on Monday night, with the ANC deciding to support ActionSA’s candidate rather than fielding their own, citing insufficient time to vet a candidate. This development follows the recent removal of Cilliers Brink from the position, marking the fourth mayoral change in Tshwane in three years.
Dr Moya, who previously served as the deputy mayor, is expected to be formally elected during a council meeting scheduled for Wednesday. This agreement between ActionSA and the ANC demonstrates a pragmatic coalition approach aimed at ensuring stability in Tshwane’s governance. ANC spokesperson Bafuze Yabo confirmed the decision, indicating that the ANC would back Dr Moya’s candidacy to foster a collaborative leadership in the city.
The negotiations between ActionSA and the ANC come amidst broader challenges facing the Tshwane municipality, including issues of financial management and service delivery. Dr Moya’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, who aims to solidify the party’s influence in the region with the ANC’s support. This partnership reflects a growing trend of tactical alliances within South African politics as parties seek to manage coalition governments effectively.
