ActionSA: Orania and Kleinfontein Teach Fear, Not Culture
In a powerful statement on Friday, ActionSA’s Parliamentary Chief Whip, Lerato Ngobeni, denounced the Afrikaner-only settlements of Orania and Kleinfontein as “ideological fault lines” that betray South Africa’s democratic ideals. Ngobeni asserted that these communities are not cultural enclaves but rather sanctuaries of apartheid nostalgia, perpetuating division under the guise of self-determination.
“These communities are not heritage sites; they are sanctuaries of apartheid nostalgia, dressed up in the language of self-determination, but founded on the very bones of a brutal, exclusionary past,” Ngobeni stated. She emphasized that the misuse of Section 31 of the Constitution to justify these enclaves is dishonest, as it protects cultural expression, not the establishment of modern-day Bantustans for those unwilling to let go of apartheid’s legacy.
Ngobeni highlighted the detrimental impact on children within these communities, stating, “Behind the fences of Orania and Kleinfontein, children are not learning culture. They are being taught to fear difference, to internalise racial superiority, and to live apart rather than together.” She warned that such ideologies threaten nation-building, social cohesion, and the collective future of South Africa.
ActionSA places responsibility on the African National Congress (ANC) for the persistence of these enclaves, citing the government’s failure to dismantle apartheid’s spatial and economic legacy. “After three decades of promises, this government has failed to dismantle apartheid’s spatial and economic legacy. Instead of transformation, it delivered corruption, patronage, and dysfunction,” Ngobeni asserted.
The party calls for a united South Africa built on truth, justice, and shared prosperity, rejecting the misuse of cultural excuses and the Constitution to justify segregation. “Orania and Kleinfontein are not harmless. They are breeding grounds for division and symbolic violence against the dream of inclusion,” Ngobeni concluded.
This statement comes amid growing national debate over the existence of racially exclusive communities in South Africa. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) recently marched to Kleinfontein, demanding its closure due to its whites-only policy and alleged violations of zoning regulations. The Pretoria High Court had previously declared Kleinfontein illegal, citing its designation for agricultural use and not approved for residential development .
Similarly, Orania has faced criticism for its exclusive Afrikaner population and self-governance aspirations. The Orania Movement has appealed to the United States government for recognition as a distinct ethnic group within South Africa, seeking support for their pursuit of Afrikaner self-determination .
ActionSA’s stance aligns with other political voices calling for the dismantling of racially exclusive settlements, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and unity in South Africa’s democratic society.
