Acting President Paul Mashatile has extended his heartfelt congratulations to several South African athletes for their exceptional achievements over the past weekend, highlighting the power of sports to unify the nation and inspire hope. The weekend’s victories, coinciding with the arrival of spring, have filled the country with a renewed sense of national pride and optimism.
Key Achievements Celebrated
Among the standout performances was Mpumelelo Mhlongo, who secured a gold medal in the 100m event, showcasing his incredible speed and determination. Adding to the nation’s joy, Bayanda Walaza made history in Peru by becoming the fastest young man on earth, clocking 10.19 seconds in the 100m sprint and 20.52 seconds in the 200m sprint. Hannah van Niekerk also shone brightly in Peru, earning a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the World U20 tournament.
In team sports, the Springboks secured a thrilling 31-27 victory over New Zealand’s All Blacks, further solidifying their status as one of the world’s top rugby teams. Additionally, Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates progressed to the final of the MTN 8 Cup, adding to the weekend’s sporting triumphs.

In his message, Acting President Mashatile emphasized how these achievements go beyond individual accolades, symbolizing the resilience and unity of South Africans. “The incredible performances by our athletes this past weekend serve as a testament to their dedication, hard work, and the indomitable spirit of our people,” he remarked.
