Ace Magashule’s African Congress for Transformation (ACT) is set to launch its manifesto on Saturday. The launch, promising to draw attention from various corners of the political spectrum, will take place in Evaton Sebokeng, in the Vaal Area, at the Rivers of Living Waters venue.

The launch comes at a critical time for ACT, as it marks its determination to make a substantial impact in the upcoming national elections. The party has announced that it will contest the national elections across all of South Africa’s nine provinces despite misleading reports that it will not contest and will additionally vie for the provincial ballot in six provinces. This move excludes Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.

However, the road to the elections has not been smooth for Magashule’s party. Recently, the Constitutional Court dismissed the final bid by ACT, along with the Labour Party and the Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats (SASD), to contest the 29 May elections. The parties had sought a second chance to register their candidates following what they described as technical glitches in the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) digital submission platform. This development, although a setback, has not dampened the spirits within the ACT camp.

Responding to the court’s decision, ACT National Spokesperson Mohau Khumalo released a statement expressing the party’s stance. He conveyed that, despite the disappointment, ACT views the outcome not as a setback but as a call to continue with their campaign efforts without alterations. Khumalo said, “Our campaign will continue as normal without any changes.” He also took the opportunity to clarify the party’s election contestation plans: ACT will appear on the National Ballot in all provinces, contest the Provincial Ballot in six provinces, and take part in one Regional Ballot in the Western Cape.

Khumalo further addressed what he termed as “false media reports” and the misconceptions being propagated regarding the judgement. He fiercely defended ACT’s position in the elections, accusing certain media outlets of intentionally discrediting the party. In a forceful rebuke of what he views as unethical journalism, Khumalo called for accuracy and fairness, urging the media to reflect the unadulterated facts. “This violates the standards and norms that regulate journalism throughout the election season,” Khumalo said, highlighting the critical role of media integrity.

As the party gears up for the manifesto launch, it remains undeterred in its ambition to challenge the status quo and unseat the ruling ANC, particularly in the Free State. Khumalo’s rallying cry, “Sekusele kancane” – signalling that the time for change is near – encapsulates the fighting spirit of ACT. The party is intensifying its election campaign machinery, aiming for a resounding victory that would shake the current political dynamics.
