Ace Magashule
African Congress for Transformation (ACT) President and former ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule has levelled serious accusations against certain officials of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the African National Congress (ANC). Yesterday, before the 9 PM deadline, he formally lodged a complaint, alleging electoral malpractice and tampering with ballot boxes. Magashule emphatically claimed that the election results are “completely rigged.”
Calls for Recount
The ACT President’s allegations have echoed through the political hallways of South Africa. Magashule’s claims were bolstered by calls from the MK Party, which, during a media briefing on Friday, categorically rejected the election outcomes on grounds of electoral fraud. The party is now advocating for a comprehensive recount of votes.
Similarly, the political landscape of the Western Cape is rife with turmoil as all political factions, excluding the Democratic Alliance (DA), unite in their demand for a vote recount, accusing the DA of vote rigging. Alleged irregularities in the Free State’s Matjhabeng have also come under scrutiny, with several parties reporting instances of possible vote manipulation involving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Magashule’s Media Interview
During an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Magashule presented a forthright assessment of the election process. He asserted, “The votes have been rigged in the Free State, in huge numbers.” He further elaborated on the formal complaints lodged by his party before the deadline, affirming his stance for free and fair elections. Magashule shared,
” – The votes have been rigged in the Free State, in huge numbers.”
” – We have logged complaints in terms of code of conduct, the rules of [the IEC]. We have submitted them before the 9 PM deadline today.”
Nationwide Implications
In a sharp critique of the revealed results, Magashule emphasised that the displayed numbers do not align with the reports from the ground, provided by his party agents and even some IEC officials. His stance was clear:
” – What you see on the screen does not reflect what is on the ground… if a recount is permitted, a can of worms is going to be opened, letting all South Africans know the truth.”
Magashule bolstered his call for a recount by referencing stark discrepancies between reported and observed vote counts in specific regions. He disclosed insidious instances of potential electoral fraud, maintaining that:
” – In one station, we were recorded getting merely 30 votes where our own records show 300.”
A Deep-Rooted Issue
The weight of these allegations goes beyond immediate recount demands. Magashule suggests that the practices observed are systemic, accusing the IEC of a wider institutional failure. His statements imply a significant erosion of public trust in the electoral process, with earlier vote buying allegations coming to the forefront.
” – South Africans are tired of being lied to… tired of being used during elections.”
The Future of South Africa’s Democracy
This escalating situation leaves South Africa’s democratic institutions on tenterhooks. The legitimacy of the election results has been brought into question, and the potential for widespread recounts looms large. Magashule’s firm belief in ACT’s significant, yet unreflected, performance demands immediate action from the IEC.
” – It’s a complete rejection of the African National Congress… a wake-up call for the [ANC], the once glorious movement of the people of South Africa.”
