A Scholar Transport Driver Has Been Arrested for Drunk Driving in Johannesburg
By Nkosana Khumalo
A scholar transport driver has been arrested for drunk driving in Johannesburg after he was involved in an accident on Westpark Drive in Montgomery Park, in Randburg, on Monday morning. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle when he lost control, leading to a rollover crash that injured 12 pupils who were on their way to school.
The incident has sparked concerns about road safety for children using scholar transport, with officials urging drivers to prioritise responsibility behind the wheel. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla detailed the events, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving in a vehicle carrying young passengers.
What Happened in the Randburg Scholar Transport Accident
The accident occurred early on Monday, 28 July 2025, when the Toyota Quantum minibus, loaded with schoolchildren, was travelling along Westpark Drive. According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the driver tried to overtake another car but lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and roll over. The minibus, commonly used for scholar transport in South Africa, ended up on its side, scattering debris across the road and leaving passengers in shock.
JMPD officers arrived quickly at the scene in Montgomery Park, a residential area in Randburg known for its quiet streets but occasional traffic issues during school runs. They conducted a breathalyser test on the driver, which confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol. This violation not only endangered the lives of the 12 pupils but also highlighted a growing problem with irresponsible driving in the transport sector.
Emergency services, including paramedics, rushed to help the injured children, who were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. While the injuries were not life-threatening, they ranged from cuts and bruises to possible fractures, requiring medical attention and causing distress for families. Parents were notified immediately, and some rushed to hospitals like Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital or local clinics to be with their kids.
Driver’s Arrest and Charges
The driver was taken into custody right at the scene by JMPD officers. He has been detained at Sophiatown South African Police Service (SAPS) station, where he faces serious charges. “The driver of the Toyota Quantum was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He has been arrested and will be detained at Sophiatown SAPS. He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol,” Fihla explained.
He is expected to appear in court soon, possibly at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors will outline the case based on evidence like the breathalyser results, witness statements, and accident scene photos. If convicted, he could face fines, jail time, or a driving ban, setting an example for others in the scholar transport industry.
This arrest comes amid stricter enforcement by JMPD and SAPS on drunk driving, especially during school terms when roads are busier with transport vehicles. Authorities often conduct random checks, but incidents like this show the need for more vigilance.
Injuries to the 12 Pupils and Immediate Response
The 12 injured pupils, believed to be from nearby schools in Randburg, were quickly attended to by emergency teams. Reports indicate they were en route to classes when the crash happened, turning a routine school run into a nightmare. Medical staff treated them for minor to moderate injuries, and all are expected to recover, though some may need follow-up care for trauma.
Families have shared their relief that no one was killed, but also their anger at the driver’s actions. One parent, speaking anonymously, said it was “unthinkable” for someone trusted with children’s safety to drive drunk. Social media has been abuzz with calls for better regulation of scholar transport drivers, including mandatory alcohol testing before shifts. JMPD and emergency services cleared the scene efficiently, reopening Westpark Drive after a short closure to avoid major traffic jams in the area.
Broader Concerns About Scholar Transport Safety in South Africa
This accident adds to ongoing worries about scholar transport in South Africa, where minibus taxis and buses carry millions of pupils daily. Studies show common problems like unroadworthy vehicles, reckless driving, and overloading, leading to frequent crashes. In Gauteng alone, over 100 scholar transport accidents were reported last year, with drunk driving a key factor in some.
Just days ago, in KwaZulu-Natal, a scholar transport crash killed one child and injured others, with the driver allegedly drunk. Nationally, the Department of Transport has pushed for stricter rules, including vehicle inspections and driver licensing, but enforcement remains a challenge.
Experts call for more training for drivers and awareness campaigns for parents to check transport providers. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) often runs operations targeting scholar vehicles, fining those not complying with safety standards.
In Johannesburg, where traffic is heavy, such incidents underline the need for safe, reliable options like dedicated school buses. Community groups in Randburg have started petitions for better monitoring, hoping to prevent future tragedies.
What Happens Next in the Case
The driver will face court soon, where details like his blood alcohol level and driving history may come out. If found guilty, it could lead to licence suspension and impact his ability to work in transport again.
