POTCHEFSTROOM — Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with a violent outbreak of mob justice in Magogong village, Taung, following the tragic death of a young girl. The multidisciplinary police team assembled to investigate the situation, led by North West Police Spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, made the arrests in the early hours of Sunday, 27 October 2024. The suspects face a series of charges, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, arson, and malicious damage to property.

The suspects, comprising seven men and one woman aged between 29 and 45, are accused of taking matters into their own hands after the young girl’s burnt body was discovered in an abandoned pit latrine on 20 October. Following her funeral, community members allegedly unleashed their anger, targeting the local traditional healer, whom they suspected in the incident. The mob reportedly kidnapped and assaulted the traditional healer’s son before setting her house ablaze, where she was fatally attacked after escaping the burning structure. Additionally, a tavern and tuckshop were looted and subsequently set on fire by the mob.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in Taung Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 October 2024, as police investigations continue, with the possibility of further arrests.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena praised the investigative team for their swift action in apprehending the suspects. Kwena urged the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead cooperate with law enforcement to ensure that all those involved in the young girl’s killing and subsequent acts of mob justice face legal consequences.
