Free State Easter Babies
The Free State Department of Health, spokesperson Mondli Mvambi, reported that the Free State Province has been blessed with the arrival of 75 newborns as of the end of Good Friday, 29 March 2024. The tally includes 36 baby boys and 39 baby girls, marking an auspicious start to Easter festivities in the province.
Mvambi highlighted, “The first born of the Free State is a baby boy born at 00:01 at Parys District Hospital with a healthy birth weight of 3340 grams.”

Further enriching the Easter celebrations were two sets of twins. “The Free State is also blessed with two sets of twins born at Nala District Hospital in Bothaville and Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital,” Mvambi added in a statement. At Nala District Hospital, a baby boy and baby girl were born at 4:20 and 4:23, respectively, while Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital welcomed twin boys at 21:34 and 21:35.
However, not all news was of joy. The spokesperson shared the somber news of a baby boy born before arrival at Boitumelo Regional Hospital in Kroonstad, weighing just 790g, a stark reminder of the challenges and risks associated with childbirth.
The Free State MEC for Health, Mathabo Leeto, extended her well wishes to all the new mothers and their bundles of joy, while also conveying her condolences for the heartrending case of stillbirth. “The birth of a child is a blessing to a family and is a fulfilment of God’s purpose of human development. We have a responsibility as health professionals to give good counselling to those who experience complications and death,” said Leeto.
In her message, Leeto urged the Free State community to utilize public health care facilities for family planning to ensure safe pre-conception practices. She also emphasized the importance of immediate medical consultation for those pregnant or suspecting pregnancy to ensure proper healthcare and advice throughout the pregnancy and postnatal care period.
Highlighting the importance of responsible sexual behavior, especially during the Easter weekend, Leeto advised, “During this Easter weekend and at all times, abstain from sex or practice safe sex if you are of the right consenting age. We further urge our communities to protect our children against teenage pregnancy. Have a happy and safe Easter.”
Leeto concluded her announcement with a heartfelt thanks to the doctors, midwives, and hospital staff, whose dedication and hard work ensure the safe delivery of babies and the well-being of mothers.
