Police Rescues A Woman

A swift and coordinated response by the Phuthaditjhaba police saved the life of a 63-year-old woman who was found floating in a river in the Namahadi area on 09 September 2024. Police Spokesperson, Captain Loraine Earle, confirmed that the elderly woman was spotted at around 05:45 by members of the community near an old single bridge, prompting an immediate response from the authorities.

Sergeant Teboho Selebano and Constable Palesa Mokoena were the first on the scene. Upon their arrival, they found the woman floating face-up in the river, battling against the cold waters. Additional support was provided by Sergeant Moleko Mabe, alongside a SAPS learner diver from the Phuthaditjhaba Client Service Centre. Together, they successfully rescued the woman from the freezing waters.

Emergency medical services were quickly called to the scene, and the woman was transported to the Elizabeth Ross Hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. According to the preliminary investigation, the woman had been walking late at night when she inadvertently ended up in the river, spending several hours in the water before her rescue.

Captain Earle praised the prompt action of the community and the officers involved, stating, “The swift response of the police, after being alerted by the community, saved this elderly woman’s life.”
