By Thys Khiba – While residents of Free State and North West provinces continues to count their losses after the devastating floods; three Hippopotamus were found after eight of them escaped following the floods at Vierfontein near Vaal River.
This comes after the Free State Department of Economic, SmallBusiness Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) sent a warning to the affected residents of Fezile Dabi District Municipality to be on the lookout for eight Hippopotamus that escaped two weeks ago on Wednesday 23 February.
Hippos went missing after camps were flooded by heavy rainfalls.
Five of them are still missing after being flooded out from the Boma at Bellavae private nature reserve (game farm).

The Destea commended the Search Operation Team for successfully finding three Hippopotamus after eight of them escaped following the floods at Vierfontein near Vaal River.
“The department is thankful to the Search Operation Team for their hard work and dedication in nabbing these dangerous species,” said Free State DESTEA spokesperson MojalefaMphapang.
The department believes that the search operation team will continue to work towards recovering the remaining five alive animals.
Mphapang continued to call on community members around Vierfontein to remain vigilant as five hippopotamus are still on the loose.
Members of the public are advised not to approach or feed them if they spot them.
Hippos are mostly herbivores, but have been known to get very aggressive.
