24-Year-Old Man Arrested in Limpopo for Bribery During Easter Safety Operation

Easter Safety Operation

A 24-year-old man was arrested on Friday for attempting to bribe law enforcement officers during an Easter safety operation on the N1 highway in Mokopane, Limpopo. The suspect, found to be driving under the influence, offered money to avoid arrest, prompting swift action from the National Traffic Police and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

Incident Details

The arrest occurred during a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation aimed at ensuring road safety over the Easter long weekend, a period known for high traffic volumes and increased road safety risks. While conducting routine checks on the N1 highway near Mokopane, officers stopped the suspect’s vehicle and discovered he was under the influence of alcohol. In an attempt to evade arrest, the 24-year-old offered officers R300, leading to his immediate detention on charges of bribery and drunk driving.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed the incident, stating, “The Road Traffic Management Corporation commends the officers for showing that they are not for sale and road safety is not negotiable.” The suspect was taken to Mokopane police station, and he is expected to appear in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 April 2025.

Context of Easter Road Safety Operations

The Easter weekend is a critical period for road safety in South Africa, with authorities reporting significant traffic volumes. According to the RTMC, major routes like the N1 North and N3 South recorded an average of 2,000 vehicles per hour passing through tollgates on Thursday and Friday, while the N1 South saw around 1,000 vehicles per hour. During the 2024 Easter weekend, over 1,000 road users were arrested, and 900 vehicles were impounded for various infringements, highlighting the scale of enforcement efforts.

This year’s operations have focused on curbing drunk driving, speeding, and unroadworthy vehicles. The RTMC noted that 75,961 vehicles were stopped and checked nationwide by Saturday, 19 April 2025, with 916,927 drivers issued fines for violations. Zwane warned, “Traffic officers will undertake heightened drunk driving operations today as history shows that this kind of conduct increases on weekends.”

Limpopo’s Ongoing Battle with Bribery and Road Safety

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on bribery and corruption in Limpopo, a province with a history of such incidents. In December 2024, 22 motorists were arrested across Limpopo for attempting to bribe officers, often for driving without valid licences. Earlier, in September 2024, 11 traffic officers were arrested on the N1 between Polokwane and Musina for accepting bribes, following an undercover operation codenamed “Coconut” that began in March 2022. These cases underscore the RTMC’s commitment to rooting out corruption, with Zwane urging the public to report bribery to ntacu@rtmc.co.za or via WhatsApp at 083 293 7989.

Limpopo also faces significant road safety challenges. In the 2024/2025 festive season, the province recorded 180 fatalities from 140 crashes, a slight improvement from the previous year’s 422 accidents and 181 deaths. High-profile incidents, such as a 34-year-old driver clocking 200km/h on the N1 near Mokopane in April 2024, highlight the dangers of reckless driving.
