By Thabo Mosia
The Free State Department of Education has successfully concluded the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, with Education MEC Dr. Mamiki Maboya commending all involved for their dedication and professionalism. The exams, which ran from 21 October to 27 November 2024, were completed without any significant incidents, marking a notable achievement for the province.
In a statement released on Friday, department spokesperson Howard Ndaba conveyed MEC Maboya’s gratitude:
“We express our heartfelt gratitude to chief invigilators, invigilators, department officials, stakeholders, and learners for their efforts in ensuring the successful conduct, administration, and management of the 2024 Grade 12 exams.”
MEC Maboya also extended appreciation to the Department of Basic Education and Umalusi officials for their guidance and support during the examination period.
The marking process is scheduled to take place from 1 to 14 December 2024 at 20 designated centres across the province. Following the completion of marking, the Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Siviwe Gwarube, will announce the national results on 13 January 2025. Subsequently, MEC Maboya will present the provincial NSC results at the annual Well Done Function on 14 January 2025 at the Central University of Technology.
National Perspective
On a national level, Minister Gwarube reported that the 2024 NSC matric exams were conducted successfully, with minimal irregularities. Addressing the media, she noted that over 700,000 learners participated in the exams nationwide. Despite challenges such as flooding in provinces like the Eastern Cape, which necessitated the rescheduling of exams for hundreds of learners, the overall administration was effective.
“Despite some challenges, the overall administration of these exams has been successful, with minimal irregularities thanks to the collective efforts of dedicated educators, administrators, and learners themselves,” Minister Gwarube stated.
She emphasized the importance of the upcoming phases:
“While exam writing may be over, the task of marking, standardising, and processing results lies ahead. It is crucial that we remain focused and committed to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of this process.”
Publication of Results
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that the 2024 Matric results will be published, following an enforcement notice from the Information Regulator to halt the publication due to non-compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act. Minister Gwarube defended the practice, stating that printing the results in newspapers is not an invasion of privacy and facilitates easier access for pupils.
Free State’s Commitment to Excellence
The Free State has consistently demonstrated excellence in matric results, holding the top spot for five consecutive years, achieving an 89.03% pass rate in 2023. MEC Maboya has expressed confidence in maintaining this position, emphasizing the province’s commitment to not only sustaining high pass rates but also enhancing the quality of passes.
“We want our learners to write with confidence, believe in themselves, and make us proud as the Free State. We are confident that they will safeguard the number one spot for years to come,” Maboya said.
Support Initiatives
In preparation for the exams, the Free State Department of Education implemented several support initiatives, including a matric prayer service attended by over 800 Grade 12 learners from various schools across the Fezile Dabi District. This event, addressed by Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae and MEC Maboya, aimed to offer emotional and spiritual support to learners.
Additionally, the department organized a code of conduct pledge signing in Thaba Nchu, reinforcing the commitment of learners to uphold integrity during the examinations.
