Cape Town – A 19-year-old from the Western Cape has been arrested after a video of him attacking his grandmother went viral on social media. The disturbing 55-second clip shows the teenager slapping his grandmother across the face and hitting her head in their kitchen. The elderly woman falls to her knees but manages to stand up as her grandson continues to threaten her.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed in a statement, “The grandson of the victim was arrested at his residence in Wallacedene last night and he is scheduled to make his court appearance in Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.”
The police located the suspect in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, Cape Town, where he lives with his relatives. The grandmother is currently in hospital for an ailment unrelated to the assault and has declined to submit a statement, according to the SAPS.
Incident Details and Investigation
Initial police investigations revealed that the incident occurred last month at the victim’s residence. Although the police were summoned to the scene at the time, the family reportedly took matters into their own hands and refused police assistance. The severity of the incident became apparent when the video began circulating online, prompting SAPS to intervene and open a case docket on behalf of the victim.
SAPS Stance on Violence
SAPS emphasised their commitment to addressing crimes against women and children, stating, “Crimes against women and children are on top of the SAPS’ priority list and we will not turn a blind eye to any form of violence in this regard.”
