15-Year-Old Girl Dies in Quad Bike Collision

A 15-year-old girl has died in a horrific collision between a quad bike and a car in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, near the Westgate Mall, with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department confirming the accident happened just after midday at the corner of Swart Avenue and Andries De Bruyn Street.
The tragic incident, which unfolded on Sasturday, 9 August 2025, involved a quad bike carrying two teenagers and a car with two occupants. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the young girl from Horison was declared dead due to the severity of her injuries. The other teenager on the quad bike, believed to be a boy, was injured and received medical attention, though details on his condition remain limited. The car’s occupants escaped unharmed, but the crash has sparked fresh calls from the community for urgent road safety improvements at the notorious intersection.
According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers who responded promptly, the quad bike collided head-on with the vehicle in broad daylight, scattering debris across the road. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with bystanders rushing to help as sirens wailed in the distance. Paramedics from various services, including Netcare 911 and provincial ambulances, worked tirelessly, but the girl’s injuries proved fatal. The JMPD has launched a full investigation into the circumstances, including whether speed, road conditions, or driver error played a role. No arrests have been made yet, and police are appealing for any dashcam footage or eyewitness accounts to piece together the events.
A local resident, speaking at the scene, highlighted long-standing issues with the intersection: “This intersection has been a problem for us for quite some time. We’ve asked JMPD to assist us here, maybe put up some speed humps to stop all of these accidents. We’ve got accidents here probably twice a week. Yeah, it’s just a big problem this far. We really need JMPD or JRA to do something about this. I mean, that’s the reason we raised this concern is to try and prevent things like this from happening because every time there’s a life that’s possible that’s that someone could lose their life because of this intersection and JMPD and JRA not taking it seriously to do something about it.”
This sentiment echoes broader concerns in Roodepoort, where residents have repeatedly complained about reckless driving, inadequate signage, and the lack of traffic calming measures like speed humps or traffic lights at busy crossings. The area around Westgate Mall sees heavy traffic from shoppers, commuters, and delivery vehicles, turning minor junctions into hotspots for collisions. Just last month, a similar accident at a nearby intersection left three people injured, prompting petitions to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for interventions. Road safety experts note that quad bikes, often used recreationally by young people, pose unique risks on public roads due to their instability and lack of protective features like seatbelts or roll cages.
In South Africa, quad bike accidents have risen in recent years, particularly among teenagers who may not have proper licences or helmets. According to national statistics, over 1,200 road fatalities involving motorcycles and similar vehicles were recorded in 2024, with urban areas like Gauteng accounting for a significant portion. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned that unlicensed riders and poor road infrastructure contribute to these deaths, urging parents to supervise young riders and authorities to enforce stricter regulations. Quad bikes are classified as off-road vehicles under the National Road Traffic Act, but many end up on public streets illegally, leading to preventable tragedies.
The girl’s death has left her family and community devastated. Neighbours in Horison described her as a vibrant schoolgirl with dreams of becoming a teacher, often seen riding bikes with friends in safer areas. Counselling services have been offered to those affected, including the surviving teenager and the car’s driver, who may face trauma from the event. Community leaders are now organising a vigil at the site on Sunday evening to honour her memory and renew calls for action.
JMPD spokesperson Xanthea Limberg confirmed the details, adding that forensic teams are examining the vehicles for mechanical faults. “We urge all road users to exercise caution, especially at intersections, and remind parents to ensure their children use vehicles responsibly,” she said. The JRA has acknowledged previous complaints and promised to review the intersection for possible upgrades, including speed humps, but residents remain sceptical given past delays.
