Former police officer sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

Eleven people will appear in the Parys Magistrate Court today, 18 January 2023 on a charge of public violence in connection with violent protests in the area.

“Four were arrested during the parys protest march on Monday, and an additional seven were arrested on Tuesday in Tumahole.”, police said in a statement

“The protest actions in Tumahole have flared up again today and seven more people were arrested in connection with public violence. Shops were also looted and the road between Tumahole and Parys has been closed by police to prevent protestors from going to Parys.”

On Monday, 16 January 2023, at about 05:00, the community in Parys started to protest over service delivery, complaining about a shortage of water. This emanates from the memorandum they gave the municipality on 7 December 2022 and they were not happy with the response thereto.

The house belonging to the mother of the Ngwathe Mayor was burned and protesters also burned the municipal building and vandalized other parts of the offices. No one has been arrested in connection with this arson and malicious damage to property.

The police calls anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the arson and damage to property suspects is requested to contact the Tumahole station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Juanita van Rensburg on 082 564 9622.
