Blitzboks First Men’s Side to Defend Cape Town SVNS Title

Cape Town-In a display of grit and flair that had fans on their feet, the Springbok Sevens team, fondly known as the Blitzboks, made rugby history by becoming the first men’s side to defend their HSBC SVNS Cape Town title. On a sun-soaked Sunday, 7 December 2025, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, they edged out Argentina in a nail-biting final, winning 21-19 to claim back-to-back crowns. This victory not only lit up the stadium but also boosted South Africa’s standing in the global sevens series, showing the world the unyielding spirit of local rugby. Amid cheers from over 68,000 spectators across the weekend, the Blitzboks turned early struggles into triumph, proving that home support can be the ultimate game-changer. As the series moves on, this win sets a high bar, reminding fans why sevens rugby thrills like no other.

The tournament, part of the 2025/26 HSBC SVNS series, drew teams from around the globe to the Mother City, blending high-speed action with Cape Town’s vibrant energy. For the Blitzboks, it was a chance to bounce back from a fifth-place finish in Dubai the week before, and they did so in style, staying unbeaten through five tough matches. This success adds to South Africa’s rich sevens legacy, with past Cape Town wins in 2015, 2019, and 2024, but never before back-to-back.

A Thrilling Final: Comeback Kings Seal the Deal

The Cup final against Argentina was a rollercoaster that kept everyone guessing until the last second. Los Pumas struck first, with star player Luciano Gonzalez powering through two defenders for an early try, converted to make it 7-0. The Blitzboks looked shaky at first, with errors creeping in, but Zain Davids turned the tide by snatching a loose ball and sparking a counterattack. This led to Donavan Don’s try, levelled at 7-7 by Ricardo Duarttee’s conversion.

Argentina hit back before halftime, with Marcos Moneta scoring off a Gonzalez pass to lead 14-7. Early in the second half, Moneta struck again, racing 80 metres from deep in his own half to split the defence and push the score to 19-7. It seemed like the game might slip away, but debutant Sonwabo Sakoyi stepped up with a stunning solo try, dodging tackles to bring it to 19-14.

With time running out, Christie Grobbelaar delivered the winner, sprinting down the sideline to score under the posts. Duarttee’s conversion made it 21-19, and in the dying moments, he sealed the deal with a crucial pilfer penalty. Shilton van Wyk, who shone throughout, was named Player of the Final for his all-round efforts.

Captain Impi Visser praised the team’s focus: ā€œOne of the things that is in the character of this team is that we never give up despite how it goes in the first half. We try and fight for that inch, we try and fight for that one more ball possession because I know once we get our hands on the ball, this team can be dangerous.ā€ He added that staying “in the moment” was key to handling the pressure.

Path to the Final: Unbeaten Run Through Tough Opponents

The Blitzboks topped Pool A, facing stiff competition from Fiji, New Zealand, and Great Britain. They kicked off with a tight 24-21 win over Fiji, where Shilton van Wyk’s hat-trick proved vital despite a shaky defence that allowed three clean breaks. Next came a 19-14 victory against New Zealand, overcoming first-half mistakes like knock-ons and yellow cards to score three tries after the break.

They saved their best for Great Britain, dominating 41-7 in a one-sided affair. From the start, they kept possession and scored early through Donavan Don, barely letting their opponents into their half until late.

In the semi-final against France, it was another close call, winning 22-17. Shilton van Wyk scored twice, with Tristan Leyds and Ryan Oosthuizen adding tries. France fought back with Josselin Bouhier’s double, but the Blitzboks held firm. Coach Philip Snyman said: ā€œWe knew it was going to be tough, playing Fiji first up and then playing New Zealand afterwards and then finishing off with Great Britain. So, I think the first two games, a lot of heart, a lot of effort and attitude, so we can’t fault the guys.ā€

Crowd Energy and Off-Field Vibes: Cape Town’s Twelfth Man

The atmosphere at DHL Stadium was electric, with 36,183 fans on Saturday and 31,941 on Sunday creating a wall of sound. Mexican waves, fireworks, and performances by local stars like Jimmy Nevis and YoungstaCPT added to the fun. Springbok captain Siya Kolisi even joined in with a DJ set and dance-off, lifting spirits.

Players fed off this energy. Selvyn Davids noted: ā€œOf course we can hear the fans, we feed off their energy. They have always been there for us, and we would like to give our best results.ā€ Debutant Sakoyi shared: ā€œIt’s any kid’s dream to make their debut in Cape Town. I don’t have words to describe the feeling. I hope in the future there are more guys who can experience this.ā€

Broader Impact: Boost for South African Rugby

This win redeems the Blitzboks after Dubai and ties them with New Zealand and Fiji at 32 points atop the series log, ahead of France on 28. It’s a morale booster for South African rugby, showcasing depth amid a challenging year. The women’s side saw Australia beat New Zealand 26-12 in their final, avenging a Dubai loss.

For Argentina, despite the defeat, players like Gonzalez and Moneta shone, with coach Santiago Gomez Cora praising their fight. As the series heads next to Perth in January 2026, the Blitzboks’ resilience sets them up well. Visser summed it up: ā€œThis weekend, playing very tough opponents and beating all of them, proved that we believe in the jersey and what it stands for.”
